Bad Shooting Form in Basketball: 5 Signs and How to Fix Each One

Not sure if your shooting form is bad? Learn the 5 most common signs, from a flared elbow to a dead follow-through, and the simple fix for each.

Bad form rarely feels bad. Your shot has been the same for months, so it feels normal, even when the results say otherwise. These five signs show up again and again, and each one has a simple fix.

Sign 1: Your elbow flares out

If your elbow points at the sideline instead of the rim, the ball gets pushed sideways. Fix: keep the elbow under the ball and pointing at the basket.

Sign 2: Your legs stay straight

Arm-only shots run out of power, especially late in games. Fix: bend your knees first, then let the energy travel up through the shot.

Sign 3: The ball starts too low or too far away

A low start forces you to push the ball instead of shooting it. Fix: bring the ball up to your set point close to your body, above the forehead.

Sign 4: Your follow-through stops early

If your arm drops right after the ball leaves, the shot loses arc and touch. Fix: snap the wrist and hold the finish, fingers pointing at the rim.

Sign 5: Your body drifts

Leaning or falling sideways changes the angle of every shot. Fix: take off and land in nearly the same spot.

One fix at a time
