How to Shoot a Higher Arc in Basketball (Simple 4-Step Plan)

Want more arc on your jump shot? Follow this simple 4-step plan to raise your release and use your legs, with drills you can do at home.

A higher arc means the ball drops into the hoop at a steeper angle. That gives you more room for small mistakes. Here is a simple plan to get there.

Step 1: Raise your set point

Hold the ball above your forehead before you release it. A set point that is too low forces a flat push.

Step 2: Bend your knees

Your legs create the energy. A deeper, smooth knee bend lets you shoot up with a relaxed arm.

Step 3: Extend up and through

Straighten your elbow fully and finish with your wrist snapped and fingers pointing down toward the rim.

Step 4: Hold the finish

Hold your follow-through for a second after every shot. It trains the same motion every time.

What a good arc feels like

Practice plan: 10 minutes

  1. 15 one-hand shots from close range, high release
  2. 15 shots from 6 to 8 feet, focusing on knee bend
  3. 10 free throws, holding the finish every time

Mistakes to avoid

Track the change

Film side-view shots each week and compare your release height. HoopArea tracks elbow extension, knee bend and wrist snap, scores your shot out of 10 and shows your progress over time.

See your own shot scored. Film one jump shot and HoopArea maps your joints and scores your form out of 10, with the exact fixes. Download HoopArea free on the App Store
